Coming Home

There is no such uncertainty as a sure thing.

– Robert Burns

Nothing is certain in life. Certainty is an illusion born of fear and insecurity. Yet how many of us act as if certainty is attainable if we only limit our experiences enough, try to control things enough, pay attention to fear and compulsion enough?

It seems that in an innocent effort to escape the fear of uncertainty, we pay attention to it and are motivated by it. We try to control our lives in an effort to feel comfortable, fearless, certain. But life doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately all we are doing by living this way is denying ourselves rich and wonderful experiences of life.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.
– Lao Tzu

Many people talk about a universal consciousness or energy. Some call it God, others Love, more Source. Whatever the name we choose, the idea of a Universal Mind has been a recorded part of Western philosophy since 480 BC. Since then, religion, philosophy and science have sought to explore this omnipotent energy that we are said to be a part of, an expression of.

Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.

– Alan Watts

If we are a part of this endlessly creative, magnificent energy that is experienced as love, why do we pay so much attention to our fears? Why do we try to stay safe by putting up endless boundaries and creating compulsive behaviours? We are trying to feel better about the uncertainty of life but we are looking in the wrong direction.

We have free will. With free will comes preference. With free will comes character and identity and opinion. But beyond character, is a connection to an energy that is creating and powering the entire universe.

Again and again we must turn within. We must turn to a place before and beneath our conditioned and manipulated thinking and seek truth and safety in our essence rather than in self imposed rules and behaviours. Certainty is a concept that just doesn’t exist. Our desire to make ourselves feel better by acting as if it does and seeking ways to ensure it just creates a greater feeling of unease and anxiety.

This universe is not outside of you.

Look inside yourself;

everything that you want,

you are already that.”

– Rumi

So, what are our options? To begin with, we must question and disengage with the experience of our thinking; just because we fear something will be upsetting/ uncomfortable/ dangerous does not make it so unless we choose to experience it that way. Life is much more enjoyable when we relax into it. If we turn away from our thinking and instead towards the energy we are a part of, the wisdom within, we will find a much easier way of being that allows us to flow with uncertainty, rather than create tension when we try to flee it.

The energy we invest in trying to control things can be better spent. When we understand that we are connected to a dependable source of peace and wellbeing, we stop wanting to control life because we become less concerned with staying safe, certain, still.

Suffering is not holding you. You are holding suffering. When you become good at the art of letting sufferings go, then you’ll come to realise how unnecessary it was for you to drag those burdens around with you. You’ll see that no one else other than you was responsible. The truth is that existence wants your life to become a festival.
– Osho

We are born of and guided by a magnificent energy that is resilient and creative. We get to choose our present once we wake up to our beginning. We can have any experience that we want of life. We can trust our intuition over the experience of our fearful thinking. The feeling of safety, home, wellbeing can never be found in fear but in the peace of mind that occurs when we let go of our limiting thoughts and beliefs and the experience of them.

Life’s events are mostly out of our control but what we do have control over is how we choose to experience them. Are we guided by wisdom or fear? Are we judgemental or understanding? Are we right or happy? Are we connected or lost? We all have the ability to lead happy, healthy lives despite the events that have occurred or are occurring in them. This becomes something we realise when we surrender to life and trust the energy of the universe that we are a part of to help us navigate difficulties and challenges.

Trusting yourself is trusting the wisdom that created you.

– Wayne Dyer

We have limitless potential. When we wake up to the fantastic resources we hold within us, it no longer makes sense for us to pay attention to conditioned thoughts that guide us to act out of fear and a lack of control. Instead, we can flow with life, seek comfort within and experience the peace of knowing we are always home.

You’re not just a physical being. You’re something far greater. Go beyond the physical to the spiritual part of you. There you will find more power than you’ve ever realised in your life.

– Sydney Banks
