Our Four Day Juice Cleanse

We have just completed a mini juice cleanse of four and a half days to refresh, restore and renew. So, what has made us feel so great and why do we take a break from eating every now and again for a little liquid cleanse?

The purported benefits of juicing organic fruits and vegetables include increased energy levels, clear skin, better quality sleep, stabilised blood pressure, weight loss, elimination of toxins, efficient digestion and spiritual and mental wellbeing.

So how does it work?

  • Removing fibre allows the body access to enzymes and phytonutrients it would otherwise be unable to absorb.
  • The body takes a break from digesting and is able focus energy on detoxing, cleansing and health issues that need attention.
  • Mucoid plaque which accumulates in the bowel and prohibits proper absorption of nutrients is broken up and eliminated.
  • The body is flooded with micronutrients.
  • It creates a habit of juicing that can be carried forwards into every day life.
  • The taste buds reset leading to a healthier lifestyle post cleanse.

Here is how we enjoyed our cleanse:

Rest

It is helpful to cleanse during a period when we are able to rest and reset. A weekend or holiday is the perfect time to juice as the body is aided in detoxing by any downtime we give it. Longer cleanses can be begun during these periods to allow for detox symptoms to occur when we are able to be still and calm.

Inspiration

Reading and watching inspiring books, films and documentaries such as cook books we are excited about, spiritual poetry that touches the soul and our favourite life affirming films is a great way to spend cleansing time.

Exercise

Light exercise is beneficial during a cleanse as it helps keep the lymphatic system in order. The lymphatic system carries a fluid around the body called lymph that delivers nutrients to cells and waste to the lungs, kidneys and colon for elimination. Exercise keeps lymph moving freely throughout the body as well as clearing any blockages that create pain, fatigue and weight gain. Some days we did nothing but work, juice and sleep whilst others we had more energy for light rebounding, qi gong and gentle yoga for anything between 5-15 minutes at a time. The key is to respect our bodies and their needs.

Pampering

Soothing baths, diffusing essential oils, burning incense, practising self massage, lighting candles, applying hair and face masks are just some of the ways we treated ourselves to comfort and care whilst cleansing.

Teas

We drank herbal teas throughout the day in between our juices as well as lemon water when we got thirsty. We enjoyed liquorice, red clover, nettle, peppermint and rosehip.

Juice Feasting

We feasted rather than fasted, meaning that we responded to hunger signals by drinking the amount of juice we needed to feel satisfied which was about 3-4 litres a day. This is a gentler way of cleansing than setting out a limited number of juices throughout the day and is easier to commit to and enjoy.

Breaking the Fast

We paid attention to what our bodies were telling us and after four and a half days knew it was time to break the fast. We did this with a light meal of mango salad packed with coriander, dulse and fresh vibrant greens.

The Juices

Day One

Juice One: ½ lemon ½ cucumber, 1 inch fresh turmeric, 1 inch fresh ginger, 2 stalks celery, 4 small apples
Juice Two: ½ cup water, 3 large stalks kale, 4 oranges
Juice Three: ½ cup water, ½ lemon, 4 carrots, 4 parsnips
Juice Four: 1 mango, 1 pineapple
Juice Five: 1 cucumber, 1 head romaine, 2 stalks celery, 6 small apples

Day Two

Juice One: 1 cucumber, 1 bunch celery, 1 punnet green grapes
Juice Two: ½ cup water, 1 large beetroot, 1 punnet blueberries, 4 small apples
Juice Three: 1 garlic clove, 1 inch fresh ginger, 1 handful rocket, 1 broccoli stem, 4 stalks celery, 4 tomatoes
Juice Four: ½ cup water, 1 inch fresh turmeric, 1 head romaine, 3 mangoes
Juice Five: ½ cup water, 3 cups chopped kale, 12 satsumas
Juice Six: ½ cucumber, 1 galia melon, 2 stalks celery, 4 small apples

Day Three

Juice One: ½ lemon, ½ cucumber, ½ head broccoli, 1½ cups mixed leaves, 3 cups chopped kale
Juice Two: 1 inch fresh turmeric,1 inch fresh ginger, 1 large beetroot, 2 oranges, 10 carrots
Juice Three: ½ cup water, 1 lemon, 2 cups brussel sprouts, 6 apples
Juice Four: ½ cup water, 2 mangoes, 4 large stalks kale, 6 satsumas

Day Four

Juice One: 1 lemon, 1 galia melon
Juice Two: 1 inch fresh ginger, 1 lemon, 1 cup water, 1 handful fresh parsley, 4 cups spinach, 6 apples
Juice Three: 1 inch fresh ginger, 1 handful fresh coriander, 1 romano pepper, 1 cucumber, 1 head romaine, 2 carrrots, 4 garlic cloves, 4 tomatoes
Juice Four: 1 inch fresh turmeric, 1 cup water, 1 head celery, 10 mandarins

Day Five

Juice One: 1 cantaloupe
Juice Two: 1 honeydew
Juice Three: 1 lemon, 1 head celery, 1 cucumber, 2 apples, 3 cups chopped kale

Our Tips

Sieve your juice to aid cleansing. | Drink lemon water to lessen detox symptoms of headaches, fatigue and nausea. | Go to bed at a reasonable time and allow yourself to rest even if you aren’t sleeping. | Scrape your tongue throughout the day to clear away toxins. | Include nut and seed milks for a more substantial liquid meal. | Add green powders such as Hawaiian spirulina and barley grass juice powder to increase energy. | Body brush before showering to encourage elimination of toxins. | Check the ingredients in your cosmetic and household products to ensure you are not adding to your toxic load. | Congratulate yourself on every juice.
