Review: Alchemical Botanical Skin Care from KYPRIS

KYPRIS makes skin care that beauty dreams are made of. White and gold boxes inscribed with self care mantras house botanical products that perform miracles on skin. Made entirely from organic and wild crafted botanicals, there is a feeling that some kind of magical and divine alchemy has occurred in the production of these products which come in glass jars and bottles printed with floral designs and gold lettering.

KYPRIS do not promise miracles. In fact, they advise patch tests and warn that not all skin is suited to essential oils. A skin care quiz allows site visitors to explore a list of suggested products and there are also options to shop by skin type and benefit as well as product type.

At KYPRIS, emphasis is on self care and empowerment through a beauty ritual that connects women to the feminine and natural as well as the beauty within: beauty for KYPRIS is about wellbeing within and without.

We tried a simple routine with five of their products and were blown away by the results, in fact the morning after our first day of using KYPRIS, skin looked younger, rested, better hydrated and smoother than before. So, it was only 24 hours before we were hooked.

We began morning and night time routines with the Cleanser Concentrate, a blend of moringa, prickly pear and probiotics, as well as essential oils, suitable for most skin types and designed to remove impurities and free radicals, dissolve congestion and reinvigorate skin. Its light silky texture and gorgeous scent make this a luxurious pampering product. It is an extremely concentrated formula that lasts and lasts and lasts; a very light layering is all that is needed to cleanse well and leave skin glowing and dewy; not something that is often the case post cleansing.

To moisturise in the mornings we created a microemulsion as per the KYPRIS instructions of mixing 2-5 drops of our chosen Beauty Elixir and Customising Serum. The Beauty Elixirs are active reparative beauty oils formulated by skin type with natural actives that nourish, moisturise, soothe and brighten skin. The Customising Serums are botanical emulsions made to be mixed and matched for desired results.

We chose Beauty Elixir III Prismatic Array from the three Beauty Elixirs. Free from essenital oils, it is suitable for most skin types and its active formula contains CoQ10, Vitamin C ester and a rainbow of phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, and natural actives including sea buckthorn, prickly pear, pomegranate and cranberry oils that lend the elixir its beautiful hue which adds a subtle colouring to enhance skin appearance. We found this oil to be soothing, easily absorbed, moisturising and brightening. Reasurringly it smells of plant oil; there are no perfumes or additives here.

We chose Antioxidant Dew as our morning and day time serum. Designed for most skin types it contains 26 active ingredients including sea algae extracts to hydrate skin without overwhelming pores, xylitylglucosides for exra hydration, rose extracts to soothe and tone, tamanu to repair the appearance of past blemishes and inspire cellular renewal and Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline (DPHP), a botanically derived amino acid, to support collagen. This is a light lotion-like product that reminds us of aftersun in texture. It carries a light scent of rosemary, is extremely hydrating and a little goes a long way.

In the evening we used Moonlight Catalyst with our elixir to gently revitalise skin during sleep. This very light gel-like liquid smells fresh and herbal and soaks into skin immediately, hydrating with no residue. Waking up is a pleasure after use because skin looks so fresh and well. Designed to clear pores, even skin tone and diminish blemishes, this is a potent combination of renewing fermented pumpkin enzymes, conditioning biomimetic EGF and hydrating botanical extracts that refine and renew the complexion without irritation or peeling. Hawaiian sea algae deeply hydrates skin and replenishes moisture balance without clogging pores and extracts of rosehip seed and sea buckthorn fruit deliver essential fatty acids and phytonutrients to care for irritated or chapped skin. This serum is a botanical superstar we are sure we’ll be using forever.

Twice a week, after cleansing we used The Glow Philtre treatment mask for Vibrant Luminosity and it does what is says on the tin. Suitable for most skin types, this is a powerful yet gentle combination of pomegranate pith enzymes, softening extracts of sea fennel stem cells and sea algae and hydrating silver ear mushroom that revitalise skin surface, clear pores, smooth texture and make skin glow. This jelly-like formula smells fresh and floral and every time we have used it, the next day we have been complimented on how well we look.

We really could not like KYPRIS more and whilst their price point is at the higher end of the market, we really feel you get what you pay for with these exquisite products. They are long lasting, excellently designed and made with pure intentions.

We spoke with founder Chase Polan about her inspirations and motivation.

What inspired you to create KYPRIS?

I founded KYPRIS upon the truth that feeling beautiful is a birthright. That beauty is not some reductive, externalised goal but a vital spiritual experience of love, acceptance and pleasure. When we take time to properly care for ourselves, the joy we feel infuses our wellbeing and days, resonates throughout our families and communities and exponentially enhances our quality of life. I want this for myself and I want this for you.

I am of the very strong opinion that to create an effective, truly sustainable selection of products, the powers of green science must be selectively implemented in formulas along with a refocus on authentic, luminous beauty.

As I work with our team to source ingredients and create offerings, every decision made for our formulas and marketing are guided by the principle that beauty can only be created from beauty itself: Beauty from Beauty.

For some of us, at different times for different reasons, our beauty, that potent lens, is more challenging to locate. Beauty comes from within in the sense that how you feel and experience yourself and the world is of vital importance.

What makes you different to other natural beauty brands?

I see KYPRIS offerings as tools for loving self care rituals that make people feel amazing. You are the magic ingredient and gentleness is the alchemical elixir. If your desires are expansive, actually loving and wellness-enhancing, these are worth taking seriously and delivering upon.

What is the meaning behind the brand?

According to legend, the goddess Aphrodite rose from the foaming and frothy waters off the coast of Cyprus. The Cypriots so enamored with the goddess gave her a name in honour of their shared home, Kypris.

Unlike the common retellings of Aphrodite’s stories in which she is beautiful yet haughty, the ethos of Kypris has retained her pre-Hellenic, divinely feminine roots. War never conquered her.

The goddess exudes sensuality voluptuous with love and wisdom, a bastion of sisterhood and family. A healing and inclusive energy. She derives her beauty from communion with nature, both within and of the Earth, one and the same. Detoxifying contemplative baths. Anointments of exotic oils and unguents. Her renowned beauty has always been and still is the ecstasy of being.

Where are your products made? Are they faitrade and sustainable?

All of our products are made with Love in Scottsdale, Arizona. KYPRIS ingredients come from both the US and from around the world. Some are propagated in labs, yet most are grown in fields, sometimes in remote places with developing economies.

Another metric of sustainable skin care rests in our customers’ experiences of the line. While efficacy and safety are our first priorities, employment of an expansive beauty philosophy best honors you and your relationship to your beauty.

Often sustainability refers exclusively to ecological concerns. As a holistic brand, KYPRIS recognises sustainability as both an environmental and social imperative.

KYPRIS is GOLD certified by the US Green Business Association, California Prop 65 Compliant, a member of LOHASIA, and a member of The Green Spa Network of which KYPRIS founder, Chase Polan, sits on their Personal Care committee.

Are your products organic?

We love our certified organic ingredients. Yet, occasionally we feel comfortable sourcing from suppliers who do not have certification even though no questionable chemicals are used to produce the crops and raw materials. This allows us to purchase from small farms and co-ops throughout the world. In some cases, an ingredient supports an entire community and in others it provides opportunities for additional income.

Beauty with a soul supported by science.

When procuring KYPRIS ingredients and creating products, we work to offer you the best of science and Nature while simultaneously honoring the communities from where they come and, in turn, honoring you.
