How to Care for Your Skin this Autumn

It’s autumn. We have left behind the hot sun and are approaching cold and wind. Autumn is the perfect time to help our skin repair after the dry heat of summer whilst preparing it for the harshness of winter.

The atmosphere in autumn is dry and cool and common skin problems include flakiness, sensitivity and clogged pores. Skincare regimes require an upgrade at this time of year and there are a few essential steps to getting your skin to look and feel its best.

Removing build up of oils, dead skin and debris is an essential part of any skincare routine. In autumn, opt for a creamy cleanser that contains natural plant oils and avoids drying ingredients such as detergents that will moisturise your skin whilst cleaning it.

Rebalance your skin with a toner that is hydrating yet also mildly acidic that will cleanse, tone, close pores and balance sebum secretion.

Moisturise with a product that is easily absorbed by the skin but that is denser than a lotion. Now the air is cooler skin needs a barrier that protects its outer layer from water loss whilst also keeping it hydrated. Look for something that includes ingredients known to rebalance and regenerate cells. For extra help, invest in a second product that is anti-inflammatory and soothing to distressed skin.

Remember to exfoliate at least once a week. A scrub based on natural oils will remove dead skin whilst moisturising, soothing and hydrating. An all natural product will gently polish your skin leaving it smoother and fresher.

Take your routine to the next level by treating your skin to a weekly face mask or overnight treatment that will revitalise, deeply nourish, boost radiance and improve tone and texture.

Organic and Plant Based

Always choose organic products free from animal ingredients when possible. Your skin is your biggest organ and absorbs everything you put onto it. Unfortunately just choosing organic isn’t always enough. Some less ethical companies will still include ingredients considered toxic to the body so do your research. If you don’t recognise an ingredient or are unsure about it, look it up. The easiest way to ensure your products are clean is to opt for companies that use few, plant based ingredients.

Our current favourite skin care brand is the British based company Odylique. Their products are almost entirely vegan, never tested on animals, organic, come in recycled and recyclable packaging and contain few ingredients.

The Odylique Philosophy:

All ingredients must have therapeutic value, and the product must be a joy to use. This means we use actives – herbs and essential oils – in therapeutic concentrations for optimum benefit. Plant oils must be virgin and cold-pressed so that they have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact, so as to actively nourish the skin and protect it from premature ageing.

Odylique and Essential Care products are free from synthetic chemicals and are all certified to strict Soil Association organic standards. We were one of the first companies to create certified organic cosmetics and follow the precautionary principle to formulate the purest cosmetics possible.

Our 30-year focus on sensitive skin means that we also have a unique position on potential allergens. We avoid all synthetic chemical irritants and possible allergens like artificial fragrance. In addition, we exclude lanolin, wheat, dairy and soya derivatives, salicylic acid, peanut oil, common allergen tree nut oils, and more.
